Iron Man Cal Ripken to Deliver Commencement Address
Thousands of University of Maryland students will be joined by family and friends on Sunday, May 19, 2013 to celebrate UMD's spring commencement ceremony. Degrees will be presented to 7,692 graduates, including 5,546 bachelor's candidates, 1,794 master's candidates, and 622 doctoral candidates.

Cal Ripken, Jr., founder of Ripken Baseball, Inc. and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and a former Baltimore Oriole, will deliver the commencement address. Born and raised in Maryland, Ripken played shortstop and third base for the Baltimore Orioles for more than two decades. In 1995, Ripken broke Lou Gehrig's Major League record for consecutive games played and became known as the Iron Man of baseball. Since his retirement from the sport, Ripken has focused on using his skills, experience and passion for baseball to help grow the game at the grassroots level.
UMD Senior Raishay Lin will be presented with the University Medal, which is awarded each year to the graduating senior who best exemplifies academic distinction, outstanding character and extracurricular contributions to the university or public communities. Lin, a North Potomac, Md. native, is an English major, member of the Honors College, and a conversation group leader in the Counseling Center's ESOL program. Following graduation, Lin will pursue a law degree at Harvard University.
Vijay Baharani, also a graduating senior and an electrical engineering major, will deliver the graduating student remarks. Baharani, a native of Gaithersburg, Md., is a Banneker-Key scholar and has been active in the community – serving as a fourth-grade math tutor and mentor with America Reads*America Counts.

The University of Maryland's cable TV station UMTV will carry the commencement ceremony LIVE in both Prince George's and Montgomery counties. On campus, you can watch UMTV on channel 38. Comcast customers can watch on Channel 73 in Prince George's County and on Channel 2 in Montgomery County. On Verizon, the event will be on Channel 40 in both counties.
The ceremony will also be streamed live by the University of Maryland. A link can be found at www.umd.edu.
Risers and a mult box will be available to media. Media check-in will be located on the floor of the arena, in the rear of the graduates' seating area. Only media with proper credentials will be allowed on the floor.
