Unique Food Destination Featuring Arts and Innovation Coming to College Park

UMD alumnus Scott Plank to partner with University on an innovative new development concept featuring culinary, performing arts, entertainment and collaborative entrepreneurship

food, arts and entrepreneurship hallCOLLEGE PARK, Md. – Scott Plank’s development company War Horse is partnering with the University of Maryland to create a dedicated place that will encourage impactful collaboration and the commercialization of ideas among students, young professionals, entrepreneurs, and the community through food, arts and innovation.
 
Plans for the 15,000-square-foot project include a premier restaurant with an indoor-outdoor stage and courtyard, a teaching kitchen, performance spaces for aspiring artists, dynamic meeting spaces for academic partnerships, and other features to drive the startup culture flourishing in College Park.
 
The  adds to the growing list of developments in Greater College Park and is adjacent to The Hotel at the University of Maryland.  Plank’s concept is part of the University of Maryland’s ongoing initiative to enhance the academic campus and the surrounding communities.
 
“This adaptive reuse project will transform a vacant property into an active hub of arts, entertainment and food for students, faculty and the entire community,” said Carlo Colella, UMD's vice president for administration and finance. “Scott is a true visionary when it comes to placemaking, and we are excited to partner with his creative team on this effort.”
 
Scott Plank, a UMD alum (‘88 Urban Planning) and former Under Armour executive, has had success in transforming spaces and engaging surrounding communities in his War Horse development projects. “I envision a fun and inspiring place where students, startups and the community come together to share food, participate in a culture of artistic expression, and collaborate in ways that only partnering with a major research institution can allow,” said Scott Plank. “I’m thrilled to be back on campus using the tools I learned at Maryland to build a fun and exciting platform for artists and entrepreneurs to collaborate. “

food, arts and entrepreneurship hallThe concept is a mash-up of Plank’s similar successful concepts; Belvedere Square Market in Baltimore, his San Francisco mid-market super pop-up The Hall-SF, and his philanthropic endeavors, such as the Baltimore School for the Arts Center for Collaboration, Arts and Technology (CCAT). However, this is the first time Plank has brought this concept to a collegiate community.

Academic leaders see the potential in the collaborative space being announced today. “This project will provide a unique and lively environment where students, faculty and community members can come together to share and exchange creative ideas,” said Bonnie Thornton Dill, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at UMD. “It will help us fulfill our mission to enhance social engagement, and I look forward to seeing the impact of this project for years to come.”

“We are seeing unprecedented, positive changes in College Park,” said Ken Ulman, the university’s Chief Strategy Officer for economic development. “This arts, education and food hall will be the heartbeat of our innovation ecosystem, and we are grateful that Scott brought this project and programmatic vision to the University of Maryland campus and College Park community.”
 
The concept will be developed in two phases, starting with activation of the expansive courtyard that is slated to open in fall 2016. Plans to complete the full dining and entertainment space are planned for spring 2017.
